Science Curriculum

science.jpg

At Saughall All Saints Church of England Primary School, it is our intention to provide a high quality science education that provides children with the foundations they need to recognise the importance of science in every aspect of daily life including how to stay healthy and safe. We give the teaching and learning of science high prominence by ensuring that it is taught at least once a week. We understand how the effective teaching of science provides an opportunity for children to gain some of the cultural capital they require to succeed in their chosen endeavours as they move through their lives.

Our curriculum will enable children to become enquiry-led learners who develop their knowledge and skills through researching, investigating and evaluating experiences. It will encourage respect for living organisms and for the physical environment. It will support them in understanding their own impact, both positive and negative, on the world around them.

Teachers will ensure that all children are exposed to high quality teaching and learning experiences. These will engage the children’s interest, enabling them to develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They will be encouraged to ask questions about the world around them and work scientifically to further their conceptual understanding and scientific knowledge. This will be done through using a range of high quality resources and particularly Explorify.

Children will be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes. It will provide opportunities for the critical evaluation of evidence and rational explanation of scientific phenomena as well as opportunity to apply their mathematical knowledge to their understanding of science, including collecting, presenting and analysing data. Children will be immersed in key scientific vocabulary, which supports the acquisition of scientific knowledge and understanding. This vocabulary will come from displays, rich discussion throughout lessons and crucially from scientific reading. Children will be encouraged to satisfy their scientific interests through research in textbooks, reference books, magazines and through appropriate websites. It is vital that children understand that the sharing of scientific knowledge through the written word has been one of the key factors in the progression and development of this subject through the ages.

All children will be provided with a broad and balanced science curriculum that reflects the equality and diversity policies and practice in school.

Below is a photograph of our whole-school science display which celebrates the children's work and shows their progression as they move through our school.
